Kathy Lopes
Kathy Lopes is the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for Newton Public Schools and holds an adjunct faculty position at Simmons University Graduate School of Social Work. Previously she was appointed as the Assistant Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. Her career began in Boston, MA as a school social worker and led her to Washington DC, where she served in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education. She returned to MA in 2010 and has since taken on managerial and administrative roles in the fields of social work and education. Additional training and facilitation experiences include workshops, panels and keynote addresses on topics of cultural humility, antiracism, social action, and advocacy. Throughout her career, equity and inclusion have remained an integral part of her leadership and strategic planning priority. Lopes received her Master of Social Work from Simmons College and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She is an elected member of the National Committee on Women’s Issues (NCOWI) – a sub-committee of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the current President of the Association of Black Social Workers (ABSW) – Greater Boston Chapter.
